Volunteer Opportunities

Help us care for the rescue animals at ECC

Chore Shift Volunteers

Farm chores involve twice per day feeding of our animals, general maintenance and repair, manure management, and assistance in other projects as we continue to expand our facilities. If you enjoy working outside, getting a bit dirty, and spending time improving the lives of rescue animals, we have a job for you!

Volunteers must complete training and there is a general time commitment requested. Individuals must be 18+, except on designated teen volunteer days offered throughout the year.

Interested in Volunteering?

  • We’re thrilled you’re interested in joining our community and supporting the rescue horses and donkeys who call our sanctuary home. Whether you’re a seasoned equestrian or brand-new to horse care, this program offers a structured way to learn, grow, and contribute to our mission.

All prospective volunteers begin by scheduling an Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) session. This session provides:

    • A brief tour of our sanctuary

    • An introduction to our safety protocols

    • Initial, hands-on training in equine care and what to expect as a volunteer

This session ensures you’re prepared to work safely as a horse care volunteer.

  • Our volunteer levels are designed to match you with appropriate responsibilities. As you gain experience and training, you can progress through three volunteer levels:

    Level 1:

This is where everyone starts after attending their onboarding EAL session! Level 1 volunteers work under full supervision of staff as they learn the basics.

    • Tasks may include: cleaning and mucking, filling water troughs, observing equine behavior, and assisting with hands-on tasks such as grooming under direct guidance.

    • Perks:

      • Hands-on time with horses and training

      • Membership to our private volunteer Facebook group

    • Commitment: At least two shifts per month (4 hours+ per month) plus enrollment as a Monthly Supporter (strongly encouraged but not required) or Herd Member

    • Advancement Requirements:

      • Completion of 25 hours of supervised volunteer work

      • Successful completion of a two-part safety skills assessment, OR completion of 4 EAL sessions with a facilitator

    Level 2:

Volunteers at this level have demonstrated basic horse-handling skills and an understanding of herd dynamics, and therefore can work more independently.

    • Tasks may include: Level 1 tasks plus independently preparing feed and grooming, as well as helping with group activities/events.

    • Perks:

      • Complementary ECC shirt of your choice

      • Recognition on social media in a “Volunteer Spotlight”

    • Commitment: At least two shifts per month (4 hours+ per month) plus enrollment as a Monthly Supporter (strongly encouraged but not required) or Herd Member

    • Advancement Requirements:

      • Completion of at least 25 total volunteer hours at Level 2

      • Ability to commit to at least 1 shift per week

    Level 3:

Level 3 volunteers can operate independently. Level 3 Volunteers may assist in training new volunteers, leading ECC sponsored activities, or representing ECC in other ways on and off the farm.

    • Tasks may include: All Level 1 and 2 tasks, plus independently completing/leading chore shifts, overseeing other volunteers, and assisting with events.

    • Perks:

      • Recognition on our website

      • Exclusive invitations to special events

      • A second complimentary ECC shirt of your choice and discounts on other merch

    • Commitment: At least one shift per week (8 hours+ per month) plus enrollment as a Monthly Supporter (strongly encouraged but not required) or Herd Member

    • Advancement Requirements: Level 3 are experienced horse people who are actively dedicated to supporting ECC’s mission at the highest level. Level 3 volunteers looking to get more involved could explore Herd Membership, if not already doing so.

  • Did you know we have NO paid staff? Everyone involved in ECC is a volunteer! Your contributions make a direct impact on the lives of our rescues and allow us to offer the best care possible.

To support the herd and our work in training volunteers, we encourage volunteers to consider enrolling in our Monthly Supporter Program. Contribute $35/month to help with feed, vet care, and enrichment for the herd.
