Meet the Team

Chelsea Bollinger, M.Ed.

Founder & Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator

Chelsea founded ECC as a place for horses and humans to spend time together in a safe and unassuming space. She wanted to create a sanctuary that was centered around research-backed equine welfare practices, such as communal housing and unlimited forage access, while making horses more accessible to the public. ECC’s peaceful, private farm is also her home, and welcoming visitors and Herd Members to join her in sharing space with ECC’s residents is what this is all about for her!

Chelsea holds a Master of Education from Regent University, a Bachelor’s in Biology from George Mason University, a Virginia state teaching license, and has completed Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator training through PATH, Intl. She is a Northern Virginia native with deep ties in the Prince William County community. Her background includes over a decade as a classroom teacher in Prince William County Schools, more than fifteen years as a veterinary assistant at a local animal hospital, and numerous internships with organizations such as the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the Caretta Research Project, and others. Chelsea rescued her first horse, Huckabee, from a killpen in 2021 and that experience sparked the dream that is ECC.

Renee Avery, MMES

Equine Specialist & Learning Facilitator

From ECC’s inception, Renee has played a key role in shaping the mission and vision of our sanctuary. Her dedication to continuing education and holistic approaches are integral to ECC’s commitment to providing the highest quality care for our sanctuary’s equine residents. She is a Masterson Method Equine Specialist who shares her gift for light touch bodywork with our sanctuary residents, providing not only physical relief from years of hard work but also a sense of groundedness for these animals who have experienced so much impermanence in their lives. As an EAL Facilitator, Renee coaches participants in mindfulness techniques that benefit both human and horse, creating meaningful experiences that promote overall wellbeing.

Renee’s calling to be with horses grew from fond memories of childhood on her grandparents’ farm. After over twenty years of dedicating herself full time to the world’s most challenging occupation, motherhood, Renee began volunteering with horses and resumed riding lessons as a way to spark inspiration in the next chapter of her life. Little did she know that the spark would ignite a passion all-consuming!

Renee is a Founding Member of ECC and owner to our beloved sanctuary resident, Coleman, a killpen rescue Standardbred. Through Renee’s unwavering commitment to his care, Coleman has made great strides recovering from the wear and tear of years as a work horse and now lives comfortably as “lead gelding” of our larger horse herd.

Ashley Wickerson, LCSW

Mental Health Program Coordinator

Ashley is a Founding Member of ECC, sponsoring the care of Cyrus. Her energy is magnetic and she has a special way of connecting with our most timid horses.

Ashley holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University and a Bachelor’s degree from University of Virginia. Specializing in children and adolescents, Ashley’s experience includes nearly a decade of critical response work for underserved populations in urban Chicago. Her expertise is the guiding light for our mental health programs here at ECC.

She is currently in process for transfer of her professional credentials from the state of Illinois to Virginia, and we look forward to accepting clients at ECC upon completion. In the meantime, Ashley acts as an equine specialist as well as provides non-clinical EAL services.

We are Volunteer-Run!

All proceeds go directly back into the care of our animals. At this time, all staff are volunteer and we could not do this without their hard work and dedication!
